Future archaeology

“I study adornment and jewelry, but even before I turned to this field, I fell in love with a Chalcolithic violin figurine that I interpreted as a pendant” (Dr. Heeli Schechter, Dept. of Computational Archeology, Hebrew University).

The work presents several rings that carry information about their wearers and about their environment, on several levels. Data is recorded on the ring once it is produced, based on the wearer’s personal data, affecting its design and material composition. At the end of the design process, the rings continue to store information by virtue of their very wearing, through the scratches and the materials that change and accumulate over them in time.

The initial information recorded on the rings is personal and physiological, enabling individual research. In a comparative study of several rings, general information about the period may be gleaned.

The motivation for the project emerged when I studied the basics of archeological research in which the object is placed at the center, and the personal story of whoever bore it is not revealed. The project expands on archeological research methods, centered on an object inviting others to delve into the story of its bearer, and thereby tell their story as well as that of the society in which they lived.
