The OECD (2018) recognizes teamwork and collaboration as essential skills in contemporary work environments. In 2016, the Israeli Ministry of Education introduced a teamwork assessment criterion for Design Arts final projects in high schools, reflecting a pedagogical shift towards evaluating skills and learning processes alongside outcomes. This research investigates the challenges associated with teaching and assessing teamwork within the final projects of this track.
The study employed qualitative methods including interviews with design educators, classroom observations, and theoretical model analyses (Beckhard, 1972; Hackman, 2002; LaFasto & Larson, 2001; Tuckman, 1977). It identified discrepancies between stated requirements and classroom practices, necessitating a paradigm shift. Challenges in team formation, conflict resolution, and iterative process evaluation highlighted the disparity between theoretical frameworks and practical applications. Consequently, the Creative Pedagogies Model and a workshop evaluating its practical implications for educators were introduced.
Co-Creative Tools is a platform for fostering co-creation in design education. It integrates teacher training, peer learning, and a flexible toolkit for reflection and classroom implementation. The toolkit, based on Tuckman’s team development model and cooperative learning principles (Johnson et al., 1991), provides tools to develop and assess collaboration and communication skills. It is tailored to the unique needs of design education and project-based learning (PBL). The project's vision is to promote a transition from basic cooperation to co-creation and group empowerment.
